Livid 2003 Break Stage
This year Livid will again have a break stage in each city with a huge line-up
of bboys and bgirls and some other awesome talent including Maya Jupiter (Chan
[V]) and Triple J fave MC Trey who will both be performing at the Sydney show.
Rather than a competition style stage like last year, in 2003 it’s all
about showcasing bboy and local hip hop talent, programmed by local folk in
the know.
Sydney - The Sydney NetMD Walkman Break Stage will be just
a hop and a jump away from The Annex, and will showcase the best local DJs,
MCs and Breakers.
The lovely Maya Jupiter and MC Trey will be the local ladies taking to the
stage. Robotek and Chief Rockers will provide the soundtrack to some of Sydney’s
best breakers, including Caramell Dancers and Breakaway Dancers, fresh from
competing at the Battle Of The Year. Other hip hop and breaking stars making
appearances on the day are Brethren, Idiot Proof, NBD Crew, Seven Dollars, Nick
Toth, DJ Nacho Pop, MC Mistery, SKB and the Freakazoids.
Melbourne - The Melbourne Break Stage will also be the scene
of some mighty fine action. On the mics will be Lyrical Commission, Weapon X
(the co-frontman of Triple J Victorian Unearthed winners Fizard). On the floor
will be the crew formerly known as SubSonic, the Funky Regulators, going head
to head with The Fresh Sox crew in a freestyle bboy battle. And don’t
forget the MC Battle between Melbourne’s 10 finest MCs. The Break Stage
will be hosted by Out 4 Fame’s Andrew Montell.
Brisbane - Back again are Livid crowd favourites Gravity Warriors,
who took out the Livid X Games title in 2002. Featuring DJ Bacon, one of Brisbane’s
best DJs, on decks, and Liones on mic, the duo will provide the perfect soundtrack
to the Warrior’s gravity-defying moves, featuring six of Australia’s
most innovative DJs. They will be joined by fellow breakers Illusions Crew.

TRIPLE J BIGTOP STAGE - Beating the drum for musical diversity
By now you should all know what a great bill this year’s Livid boasts, with
one of the most diverse line-ups in the festival’s history.
Picture this. You’re an indie rock and pop fan at a festival. There’s a heap
of bands that you should check out, but you can’t be arsed running around all
day.
That’s why the Triple J Big Top was invented!
Headlining Livid’s most stylish stage will be none other than THE WHITE
STRIPES. One of the biggest (and best) bands in the world, their sound is
made even more remarkable by their absence of a bass player. Dressed in red,
white and black, Mr and Ms White are one of the coolest duos in music, according
to mags around the globe, and we couldn’t agree with them more! Their latest
album Elephant is still going strong in Australia, and their overseas tours
have received rave reviews. What else can we tell you? This band is an absolute
must see!
With a new album under their belt, San Francisco’s BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE
CLUB never disappoint live. The leather-clad trio will be in full force
for their run of Livid dates.
Despite being lumped in the “garage rock” category, YEAH YEAH YEAHs
are not your average “new rock revival” band. Led by the charismatic frontwoman
Karen O, their music is too diverse to put into a box. Speaking of Karen O,
she’s rumoured to be dating Australian-born Angus Andrew, the lead singer of….
LIARS, who will take to the stage just before YEAH YEAH YEAHs. Liar’s
album was produced by Steve Revitte (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Beastie Boys),
and has been hailed as one of the most stunning debut albums of the year by
various people in the know. LIARS shows are generally chaotic, unpredictable
and truly unique – just what we expect from a Livid set!
Ah, HAR MAR SUPERSTAR. A truly strange and unique voice in our one-hit
wonder times. We’re all waiting eagerly to see what he’ll do on stage. Reports
from overseas indicate that Har Mar is keen on nudity, Kate Moss, strange clothes,
RnB and Breakdancing. Or, he could surprise us with something new for the Australian
audiences!
Childhood friends WHIRLWIND HEAD are signed to Jack White’s Third Man
Records, and are inspired by rabbits. So much so that their debut album is titled
Do Rabbits Wonder? “We all love rabbits,” vocalist David Swanson says by way
of explaining the album’s title. “They’re so innocent, you just wonder what
they’re thinking about – they bounce around everywhere, bouncing from one thing
to the next, trying to find food, trying to survive.” When not talking about
their animals of choice, the band are known for their explosive sound, inspired
by Mudhoney and The Melvins.
THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS have just released a brand spankin’ new album titled
Learn Yourself, and they’re raring to showcase this new material in front of
the Livid audience. Despite the fact that there are no girls in the band, this
trio certainly know how to make beautiful music.
LITTLE BIRDY looks set for big things, and Livid will be the first opportunity
many East Coasters will have to check out this much-hyped band. LITTLE BIRDY
look to have substance behind the hype, and their set is being eagerly anticipated.
The BUMBLEBEEZ are a band who have won several major music comps due
to their fresh, original sound, taking out the Fly TV band comp and the Triple
J Canberra Unearthed title. With hints of the The White Stripes, Beastie Boys,
Neptunes, Missy Elliot and Beck, all combined into a total original sound BUMBLEBEEZ
are like no other band on the bill.
Coming from a punk and rock’n’roll background, JESSIE MALIN has transferred
his love of this music to his singer/songwriter solo act, giving his live shows
a bit more energy than most soloists can muster.
Opening the Sydney and Brisbane shows will be THE INFORMANTS, Brisbane’s
fine purveyors of funky rock. Made up of a who’s who of Brisbane musicians (Resin
Dogs, Drag, Broken Head, Hudson Lowboy, Fabulous Nobodies and Aquanaught), The
Informants are one of the most exciting acts you’ll be privileged to see.
Opening the Melbourne stage will be the most excellent THE ANYONES,
so make sure you get there early and say hi to these Pocket rockers.
With a line up this awesome, only one question still remains. How are you going
to tear yourself away to check out the other four stages?

2003 Livid Stage Info
LOUDMOUTH STAGE - Livid to the core!
Ah, the Livid LOUDMOUTH STAGE. It's 100% Livid to its core.
A place of unbridled energy, innumerable tatts and the odd body piercing. Bless
those hardcore fans little cotton socks!
The LOUDMOUTH STAGE is home to some very fine acts this year, which is sure
to please anyone who likes their music loud and fast.
Headlining the LOUDMOUTH in 2003 will be golf mad, punk super-band ME
FIRST & THE GIMME GIMMES, made up of members from NOFX, Swinging
Utters, Lagwagon and The Vandals. Livid's first ever covers band picks some
strange and unusual songs, turning easy-listening classics that get stuck in
your head and totally piss you off, into teenage anthems that get stuck in your
head and totally fucking rock! And style – these guys are oozing with
the stuff. How many bands have their own Tiki bar & cocktail barman on stage
with them?
TURBONEGRO may be a little strange but that only adds to the
spectacle. You won't believe what these guys do with fireworks!
Lets just say that if you ask them for a light - you'll likely get more than
you bargained for! Make sure you catch these Norwegian death punkers when they
take to the LOUDMOUTH stage at Livid.
LESS THAN JAKE is sure to be a big hit with the LOUDMOUTH
audience. Fresh from the Warped Tour, their latest release 'Anthem' is doing
very nicely with singles such as 'All My Best Friends Are Metalheads'.
GOLDFINGER are one of the many bands to emerge from the southern
Californian punk scene in the 1990's. Their constant touring has meant that
they've been in the spotlight ever since. You'll find that all that practice
does make for a perfect set, at Livid 2003.
What can we say about THE HELLACOPTERS? They're Swedish. They're
loud. They're really bloody good! If you haven't seen them yet, you're missing
out. Lucky you don't have to wait too much longer to catch them on the LOUDMOUTH
at Livid.
FOR AMUSEMENT ONLY are making a name for themselves, in their
home town of Melbourne and further afield, for playing good ol' Aussie punk
rock. Drop by the LOUDMOUTH mid afternoon to see these guys turn it on.
One of the greatest musical movements in recent times has been the rise of
the all girl punk band. Australia has produced an excellent example of this
in Brissie band GAZOONGA ATTACK. Imagine four young punk-playing
girls on a bill featuring Turbonegro? Did we mention that the GAZOONGA EP is
titled 'Your Girlfriend Is Shit?' Yep, we think they'll fit in just nicely.
BOYSETSFIRE is a band that has barely rested in the past two
years due to constant touring, and still they keep getting outstanding reviews
for their live shows. Describing themselves as a post hardcore political band,
these guys aim to deliver music with a motto.
Aussie hardcore band TOE TO TOE has been around for over a
decade. They're just as passionate about music now as they've ever been. We
welcome these Sydneysiders to the 2003 LOUDMOUTH stage.
As well as the above mentioned acts, there will be a host of local LOUDMOUTH
acts in each city. Log onto www.livid.com.au to check out tomorrow's stars playing
in your city plus five stages in total featuring approximately 60 of the best
acts from your town, Australla, the world and the universe.
